5-Day Marojejy National Park Adventure

Discover the pristine wilderness of Marojejy National Park, one of Madagascar’s most breathtaking and biodiverse rainforests. This adventure takes you deep into lush landscapes, where you’ll trek through montane and primary rainforest, encounter rare wildlife, and immerse yourself in the unspoiled beauty of one of the island’s most untouched ecosystems.

Day 1: Arrival in Sambava & Transfer to Marojejy National Park

Your journey begins in Sambava, the gateway to Marojejy National Park. Upon arrival, you will meet your expert guide and drive towards Manantenina, the park’s entrance village. Along the way, you’ll pass through scenic countryside and vanilla plantations, as this region is known as Madagascar’s "vanilla capital."

Upon reaching the park entrance, you’ll begin your trek through the lush rainforest, gradually ascending towards Camp Mantella. Along the trail, you’ll be surrounded by towering trees, orchids, and the sounds of the jungle. Keep an eye out for lemurs, endemic birds, and colorful chameleons. After reaching the campsite, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the tranquil forest atmosphere.

Hiking Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours
Wildlife Highlights: White-fronted brown lemur, Helmet Vanga, various chameleons
Overnight Stay: Camp Mantella (basic campsite in the rainforest)
Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Trek to Camp Marojejya – Exploring the Mid-Altitude Forest

After a hearty breakfast, the adventure continues with a more challenging ascent towards Camp Marojejya, situated in the mid-altitude forest. This section of the trail offers spectacular views and diverse flora, including giant tree ferns, bamboo groves, and moss-covered trees.

Today’s trek provides the opportunity to encounter some of Marojejy’s most iconic species, such as the Silky Sifaka, one of the world’s rarest and most endangered lemurs. Birdwatchers will also have the chance to spot endemic species like the Red-breasted Coua and the Pollen’s Vanga.

Upon arrival at Camp Marojejya, nestled on a ridge with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, you can rest or explore the nearby trails before enjoying a peaceful evening in the heart of the rainforest.

Hiking Duration: Approximately 3-4 hours
Wildlife Highlights: Silky Sifaka, Red-breasted Coua, Leaf-tailed geckos
Overnight Stay: Camp Marojejya (basic campsite with panoramic views)
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Ascent to the Summit – The Ultimate Rainforest Experience

Today is the most demanding yet rewarding day of the trek, as you make your way towards Camp Simpona, the highest campsite in Marojejy. The trail becomes steeper, leading into the high-altitude cloud forest, a mystical landscape covered in moss, lichens, and rare orchids.

As you ascend, the temperature drops, and the vegetation changes dramatically. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views over the rainforest canopy, with mist-covered peaks stretching into the distance. Wildlife sightings may include ring-tailed mongoose, high-altitude amphibians, and elusive bird species.

After taking in the stunning scenery, you’ll return to Camp Marojejya for the night, descending through the forest while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Hiking Duration: 6-7 hours (round trip)
Wildlife Highlights: Ring-tailed mongoose, rare amphibians, Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher
Overnight Stay: Camp Marojejya
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Descent to Camp Mantella & Waterfall Visit

After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent back towards the lower-altitude rainforest. On the way, you’ll visit a picturesque waterfall, where you can relax and even take a refreshing swim in the natural pools.

The return journey provides another chance to spot some of the park’s incredible wildlife, including lemurs, reptiles, and birds. Arriving at Camp Mantella, you’ll have time to unwind and enjoy your final evening in the heart of the jungle.
